Norfolk Southern Corporation is gifting the historic Marco Polo rail car, a car President Franklin D. Roosevelt used while in office, to the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia.

The Pullman Company built the Marco Polo in 1927 as part of a small fleet of cars named for world explorers, reserving them for VIPs who chartered their own railcar. Roosevelt traveled in the car when he was governor of New York and later as president, using it on trips to and from Warm Springs, Georgia.

The car is scheduled to arrive at the museum at 11 a.m. on Nov. 14, and a brief unveiling ceremony will follow.

The museum plans to display the car on its 35-acre campus alongside the Superb, a Pullman car used by President Warren G. Harding.

EAST SANDWICH — After a neighbor heard a noise overnight coming from the nearby train tracks off Old County Road early last week, they realized something was amiss.

The next morning, Oct. 27, the neighbor called the administrator of Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, who relayed the message to the owner of Mass Coastal Railroads. The company decided to stop a trash train that was carrying empty containers on its way back from the Southeastern Massachusetts Resource Recovery Facility (SEMASS) out of caution, roughly 5 miles before the site in question.

MAURICEVILLE, Texas (KTRK) -- A train derailment near the Texas-Louisiana border Thursday forced two schools to evacuate and motorists to scramble as the cars left the tracks in front of them.

Amazingly, a passing motorist caught the derailment on camera.

LINCOLN, NEB. – The Nebraska, Kansas & Colorado Railway (NKCR), a line managed by OmniTRAX, Inc., one of the largest privately held transportation service companies in North America and an affiliate of The Broe Group, has received a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant will fund the renovation of more than 100 miles of track in western Nebraska and eastern Colorado.

“This grant is a great example of how government and business can come together to improve safety for the communities where the NKCR operates and support commercial activities in those communities. We appreciate the efforts of the federal government, particularly Nebraska’s US senators and congresspeople, who have supported the grant from the beginning,” said Kevin Shuba, CEO of OmniTRAX.

Are We Genuflecting Too Much to Wall Street?
October 23, 2020

The six Class I railroads that practice the marketing-term model called Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR)—all of the “Big 7” except BNSF—are now reporting third-quarter financial results in the remaining days of October. There is, however, an opportunity for a more holistic quarterly briefing. There is an argument for a new checklist of service metrics that would be of interest mostly to customers and, perhaps, public policy groups. However, instead of a balanced scorecard from the carriers, we are mostly seeing accounting reports that cater exclusively to analysts.

Union Pacific sets all-time quarterly record for operating ratio

Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) eked out an all-time quarterly record operating ratio (OR) in the third quarter despite a 11% drop in operating revenue.

Union Pacific’s (UP) OR was 58.7% for the quarter, compared with 59.5% in the third quarter of 2019, amid lower fuel prices.

THE RAILROAD FOR TOMORROW: HOW TWO GREAT LINES COMBINED THEIR STRENGTHS TO CREATE BNSF

When you think of resilient industries that have stood the test of time, railroads are at the top of that list. While the technology has evolved, the basic concept of steel wheels on steel rails to efficiently move large loads is just as relevant today as it was during the origins of railroading nearly 200 years ago.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made 2020 a year of challenges to be overcome, but this global crisis will eventually fade into the past and become one of many moments that make up a part of BNSF's history.

“A lot has changed as a result of COVID-19, but one thing that has not changed is that BNSF continues to deliver the essential freight that our nation needs," said BNSF President and CEO Carl Ice.

While 2020 may always be remembered for the pandemic, it also marks the 25th anniversary of a pivotal moment in BNSF's history: The merger between Burlington Northern...

BARGING IN: BNSF BRINGS NEW RAIL BRIDGE UPRIVER

When you can’t get to the work site because of the water, you use the water to get to the work.

That’s what happened when BNSF floated in a new bridge to replace a century-old steel truss bridge over Drano Lake in Washington. The lake is fed by the Columbia River and in a remote area, with the bridge on BNSF’s line running east from Vancouver – an important route for grain export.

Using the river to float the new span 60 miles posed challenges for the Engineering team, which is used to building bridges on site. One significant challenge of this waterway is high winds. In fact, one section is known as the “windsurfing capital” of the world.

“With crane and barge operations involved, we had to make sure Mother Nature cooperated. Some days she did, some she didn’t,” said Mike Herzog, director, Bridge Construction. Smoke from nearby wildfires also added to the project’s challenges.

Having learned how to float...

Iowa Traction - Fall 2020

The color around Mason City held up pretty well to the overnight winds. And it was sunny, so we had that improvement as well. I had planned to spend the morning shooting the Iowa Traction in earnest, taking advantage of the fall colors.

I had a productive day on the tiny little railroad, but the color wasn’t so easy. The bulk of the railroad’s traffic moves over 3.5 miles of track on the north side of 19th Street in Mason City. And there’s not many trees. So I had to be a little creative. I missed a few shots, but had a few successes as well.

Meet Wilson, Koko and Brewster, the stars of "Chuggington: Tales from the Rails," an animated series on Disney Junior and DisneyNOW. The train engines known as "Chuggers" are spreading awareness about rail safety to preschoolers and elementary students, their parents and teachers through a new partnership with Herschend Entertainment Studios (HES), the franchise’s owner, Union Pacific and Safe Kids Worldwide. It’s a collaboration the Chuggers would definitely call, "Traintastic!"

I present to you the magnificent SP #4449 steam locomotive on a secret BNSF excursion run!

From April 9th through April 12th the #4449 made four round trips on the Fallbridge subdivision from Vancouver to Wishram and back once each day. This was done for the filming of an upcoming IMAX movie called "Train Time" by The Stephen Low Company.

All the rolling stock on this train is BNSF passenger cars with no passengers except #4449 crew and BNSF crew, it was simply a train to be filmed. Film crews chased the train for all four days with a giant IMAX camera and on the fourth and final day with a helicopter which can actually be seen near the end of this video. This footage was filmed on April 10th as well as April 12th with some locations the same between both days.

All footage is in...

Union Pacific's Bailey Yard lays off workers due to pandemic

The Union Pacific Railroad Tuesday laid off an unspecified number of workers in Bailey Yard’s mechanical department.

Raquel Espinoza, U.P.’s senior director for corporate communications and media relations, confirmed the first job reductions related to the COVID-19 outbreak at the North Platte classification yard, the world’s largest.

“Union Pacific is experiencing volume declines as the COVID-19 pandemic impacts the country,” Espinoza said in a email. “We are operating fewer locomotives and rail cars, requiring us to reduce our workforce in the mechanical department today.”
