Where is the Omaha Posse?

Railroadforums.com is a free online Railroad Discussion Forum and Railroad Photo Gallery for railroaders, railfans, model railroaders and anyone else who is interested in railroads. We cover a wide variety of topics, including freight trains, passenger and commuter railroads, rail news and information, tourist railroads, railway museums and railroad history.

Enjoying the photos from the Omaha Posse. They help get me through our annual Dark Ages.
Today is yet another day of gloom & doom, which does not really inspire me to get out and take photos.

As the earth begins it movement the other way, we find some BNSF westbounds at Pacific Jct and Oreapolis. First train came off the Napier Sub at Pacific Jct. Yard master must have said "Get this junk out of my yard before Christmas". Train had all kinds of stuff including 2 Boeing fuselages and some gons of track parts. Then an empty coal and oil cans at Oreopolis.

Here is a Now and Then. From the highway bridge over the old Milw and RI. Now is a connector to the old Milw to Bayard on the BNSF and the IAIS is to the right.

Train had all kinds of stuff including 2 Boeing fuselages.....

The three cars ahead of the 737 fuselages contain more parts for the 737. I have nicknamed them "Boeing bunker cars" as they look like some kind of military bunker on rails.

The placement of the 737 fuselage flats is interesting as they are usually coupled to the trailing unit. I assume this is so the train crew can keep a better eye on them.

Merry Christmas. Here is the Rock Island station at Council Bluffs earlier this year when we had snow.

Did anyone catch 3 solid NS units head east over the Blair Sub from Fremont to Missouri Valley 2 days ago? Sorry. I didn't have my camera at that time. 3 NS units leading EB. That was something.

The last day of 2018 started as an above freezing, still morning and morphed into a cold windy day. Downtown fireworks were cancelled because of wind (32MPH). It was 4 degrees when I woke up this 2019 morning. I went to Oreapolis yesterday to record the sound of distant horns and passing trains. The signals were in my favor when I got there but then changed as the UP 2645 came slowly north. The temp dropped and wind picked up as a I stood waiting for the BNSF 6002. Finally as my fingers started numbing the 6002 stopped briefly and then got the signal to move west. Nice sound from the dash 9 and then into the truck and crank up the heat. I'd do it again in minute. But not till it is at least 10F.

We got some more numbers today at Oreapolis. The 5517 meeting the 5715 and the DPU 5751 meeting the 5517. And 6666. Upside down is the elusive 9999. A Citirail and a Grienstien for good measure. And a hawk on a power pole that let me get close. It's about 50 degrees today. Probably blizzard next week and be -10.

That would explain why he was so much braver than the red tailed hawk that is usually there. I spent the whole time looking through the electronic view finder. Thanks Bill

It looks like a 2018 hatchling and should be full adult size. If you are lucky it will spend the winter there and give you some good photo ops.

Sitting by the computer around 9am, I heard Amtrak outside. The BNSF is about 2 miles away and when the air is crisp I can hear the horns from here. I took off for Oreapolis. There was a train sitting on the south track and he was sitting west of my favorite location and Amtrak would have gone behind him. So I went to East River in Iowa. I was happy to see the 43 and the 44 in control of the train. I was wishing I could stay a little longer as I counted at least 7 trains in the area. Maybe later. The towers in picture 2 hold up a pipeline crossing the Missouri River.

Good shots. It is interestng to see consecutively number Genesis units, although 44 is a very unlucky number if you are Chinese.

A few from last Monday beginning in Council Bluffs IA and wrapping up in and around Missouri Valley IA. UP 3000, build date 12-23-16, was one of five stored in MoValley. Trucks showed very little grime-new power sitting unused.

Went north looking for blue sky and sun. Missouri Valley was better than Omaha but still not good. Lots of coal and hoppers today. Some headed for the "Pleasant Prairie". TV weather showed a bar graph with percentages of snow depths. 30% chance of 6-12" this weekend. 90% of 1-2". So there will be some snow. Maybe.

The weather man predicted ice and snow and high winds at noon. So what should we do this morning? Let’s drive 50 miles to our favorite train store in Lincoln(Randy’s Roundhouse, who is not responsible for any comments made here). I’ll bet we can be back to Omaha before the world ends.
Got there before 9AM so we went downtown to see what we could find. Omaha Lincoln and Beatrice, the Big Red Line was awake.
EMD switcher was near one end with the lights on and the boarded up 101 is by the shop.
