Is the diesel powered up and contributing to the total tractive effort or just along for the ride absent an emergency?

I recently saw an interview with Ed and he said it was there to help maximize resources. They try to minimize the use of the breaks because unlike the 1940’s when there was a roundhouse in every town, if they wear out a set of breaks, they crew has to change the breaks themselves and it’s just not a fun thing to do after a long day on the rails. Also can use it to help stretch out a run between stops for water if need be.

Beautiful pictures, Brad! I was just east of Nebraska Turf Products, and when I drove by there were cars parked on either side of road for about a quarter of a mile. Was it really crowded trackside?

Thanks! Yeah, it was really crowded, but more than anything, this crowd was the worst when it came from following the rules and staying back from the tracks. People were all over the rails, the crossing, and one guy even climbed up on the signal! It really wasn't my speed, but it was all I could do when my plan didn't pan out.

I guess you can’t fix stupid. I got to play “dodge the morons running across the road” when I drove by about 5 minutes before it came through. I even saw someone who got pulled over. There seemed to be a lot more people trying to see it than last time. Maybe because it came through on a weekend this time?

I put together this 8min YouTube video with all my Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 clips from the past month. Turned out decent considering I shot it all with my iPhone7. There are some places where the camera shakes due to a makeshift tripod.

Enjoy
