Chased 611 over the weekend around Roanoke,VA. Shots aren't the best, with the weather not cooperating and me being fairly unfamiliar with the area. Crowds don't help matters either.

There were several hundred people at a few of the locations, lined up in rows of 2 and 3 to take shots. If they weren't blocking the photo line that is. One guy and myself yelled at several people to move at the tunnel shot at Montgomery. I'd been there for 90 minutes before some of these people arrived, the other guy had been there 90 minutes before I was. I got to see how selfish some folks are and disregard the fact that others are trying to get their pictures as well. As fun as shooting steam is, I think I'll be happy to go back to being the lone person chasing a train again.

I think you did a fantastic job. People are just part of the equation now. It can be a challenge to avoid them and frustrating when there are uncaring people. But most of the people that you call out will move, there is always the person that flies into the scene at the last second without regard for anybody. We just hope they get a speeding ticket later in the day. I work at trying to get sound recordings with very little noise other that the train. I love when a locomotive runs at night, but that doesn't happen very often. Then there is the "HERE COMES THE TRAIN", like we can't see it. Anyway, do the best you can do and have fun. Tom

Great job. The photos of 611 exiting the tunnel and passing under the coaling tower are outstanding.

NS999 may be their experiment battery switcher; wonder how well it's doing in its present incarnation? Previous version had problems with the lead-acid batteries not recharging properly and a new type of battery (lead-carbon?) that equalizes better was being tested.

Awesome, thanks for sharing. I can't wait to get out and chase the 611 some day. Such a cool locomotive.

Also, that first photo is sweet too! Really like how you can see more of the train though the tunnel.

Thanks, 611 was on the "bucket list" for some time now. Just leaves NKP 765 as the other current major "eastern" steam locomotive I haven't seen yet. Best thing is there so many other planned steam restorations going on right now so I might get to see even more stuff.
