A McCloud Railway "Hill Job" is advancing up the tail track at the Signal Butte switchback. Once the caboose clears the turnout, the train will reverse direction and begin backing toward Mount Shasta City.
The second cut of McCloud Railway's "Hill Job" climbs the 4% to the Signal Butte switchback.  That is Mount Shasta looming in the background.
EJ&E 654 comes into bright sunshine on the Illinois River Line (IRL). To the best of my knowledge, this is one of only 2 "J" SD-38's that still have the "J ball" logo on the nose, the other being 650. With the acquisition by CN, get 'em while you can.
EJ&E SD38 (non -2) 654, one of 4 remaining engines in the J-Ball paint, is the DPU (very unusual) for JSW1 at Crest Hill. 662, also in J-Ball paint, was the leader.
EJ&E 650 holds westbound in Joliet. The engine is a non dash 2 SD38 and it still wears the old paint scheme. It is the only unrebuilt non Dash 2 SD38 on the system. It is due to be sent to Gary for a rebuild to dash 3 standards as well as new paint soon.
McCloud Railway SD38 #36 parked for the weekend at the railroad's shops at McCloud, CA, with nearly snowless Mt. Shasta as a backdrop. Rob Jacox photo.
