A short 'road trip' (from Cypress, Tx to Katy, about 15 miles...) yesterday to see Miss Katy on display in Katy, Texas for the 4th. The town was named for the railroad and she often comes home to visit. The locals were here to see her, lots of families and kids taking advantage of the photo op...

My favorite for personal reasons: my grandfather worked for MoPac and predecessor I&GN. Just received an HO model of it as payment for some photos.

BTW the 1st is South of Brenham in Kenney.
-
Nope not me. The area is pretty popular with railfans.
-
Bill, these are near Brenham where we have some small rolling hills. It is about 1 hour NW of Houston.

Spent Monday along the BNSF Galveston sub in some familiar spots.
Happy New Year to you and yours!

...from Westfield, Tx (N of Houston) brings us a very long mixed drag with just about everything imagineable heading south to Houston. Also, i noticed a very unusual sounding horn on this one. Anyone know why?

Modern breweries are located close to their markets: cities. The cost of transportation of their finished prodct to their customers is a major consideration. A large one in Houston (Anheuser-Busch) is at the intersection of major highways (IH 10 /IH610) and has rail service for incoming raw...

KCS has direct lines to Mexico and serves the automobile industry on both sides of the border. Thru Texas, they carry coil steel into Mexico a lot, and loaded autoracks back north. As mentioned, they are strong in the chemical traffic around the Texas/Louisiana coast. I believe what made KCS the...

Spent a few hours at the old haunt in Rosenberg (TX), it is the ONLY thing I miss about my old job! It was an ugly day, heavy overcast, cool north wind and an occasional misty drizzle but the trains did not disappoint. A typical good selection of UP and BNSF (and even a CSX leader) and the last...

It isn't that they are 'too light', there are many commonities that are lighter and are handled by rail. The issue is likely the 'light' volume (perhaps that was what the story intended to say), according to this report oats and barlet together consititute less than 1% of grain shipments...

Normally (there are always exceptions) loaded grain trains start at the big elevators where trucks have offloaded from the farms in the area. The elevators take in smaller quantities and hold it until they have enough for a train load. From the elevators, trains will take them to places where it...

relatvely speaking the East Coast doesn't grow that much.
-
The bottom line is that railroads are a business and exist for other reasons than to make railfans happy. We are more emotionally oriented (“it’s what I grew up with”) than practical or what is well designed. If it’s that important, go get hired and work your way up….. ;)

neat find. let us know what you think.

Before I headed out, UP finally cooperated with a late-sun-facing WB.
-
The WB KCS had a sizeable block of these 86' boxcars.
-
KCS was pretty well represented Sunday, this WB rolled thru as the EB CP-led BNSF was still crossing (in the background). By crawling, he could allow BNSF to clear the crossing ahead.... and allow me to get several shots.
-
In a little while, another BNSF comes thru, this time east/southbound. The nice red CP unit on the lead was welcomed variety. Why do afternoon trains always have to be eastbound, forcing me to shoot into the sun?
