It missed Omaha but there are many concerns again for the Platte River and Elkhorn rivers. I drove by the Platte today and it looks like the BNSF has the span replaced on the Omaha Line but not ready for traffic yet. UP is working on their bridge but it is hidden by the BN construction so I couldn't tell at 55 MPH. The snows up north will affect the Missouri River. I-29 still isn't open to the south yet.

The real question is. How much. And just how bad will it be. Hopefully it be as bad.

I drove by the Platte river bridge before sundown today.... BNSF appears all done, pretty sure Amtrak 6 ran across it this morning. UP doesn't look as if anything has been done; still see rails from the collapsed span hanging in the air. Assuming UP had to wait for BNSF to finish(?)

wow that long? I guess given the direction of flow of the Platte their bridge took the brunt of the debris damage... might have to replace several support piers

Roaming around today I found the UP 1995 at Council Bluffs and chased it to Woodbine. Gravel roads did not survive winter very well. Many soft spots. The roads I used to drive 50 mph on were down to 20 or 25 most of the time. Might be time for a Jeep. And the 4887 EB on the fill leading away from the Missouri River. Traffic really heavy on HWY 30 due to I29 being closed so I shot this out the windshield.

Finally got out for one train today. Still water water everywhere and haze from fires in Canada. Here is a Canadian visitor at Missouri Valley.

Steam in Omaha? Yes........
New things going on at the Omaha Zoo. The recently opened Asian exhibit meant some track work and a new bridge on the Omaha Zoo Railroad. Also added are tracks to store the passenger cars when they are not all out being run.

Here are some photos of the 1968 Crown 4-4-0 #119 and the 1890 Krauss 0-6-2T #395-104 crossing the new bridge.
Also the 119 approaches the crest of the grade after leaving Omaha station. The passenger car tracks just to the left.

The new area of the zoo is awesome. It looks like the zoo really stocked up on extra railroad supplies. Stacks of new ties extra rail and even a switch that currently leads to nowhere.

Here are a couple photos I took last month.

Highway 30 still closed at Arlington because of the bridge over the Elkhorn River being gone. But I stopped for 2 at Kennard with one more in the hole. The 2535 is the DPU of the 5531 and the 5538 is on an intermodel. 2 views about 4 miles apart as the 5538 attacks the hill east of Arlington. A formidable obstacle for the CNW and UP alike.

The Hwy 30 bridge was in place about 6 weeks ago with the abutments severely damaged. Wonder if they decided to take it down and start from scratch. Hwy 30 was missing in many locations to the west of the bridge and the many rural roads near the river are heavily damaged or missing. Where the river curved east to head under the old CNW bridge at Arlington. It tried to go straight and severely eroded the southwest bank of the river. If it had been successful, the river would have moved about 200 feet to the west, cutting thru the curve on the west side of the bridge.

Some shots from today's positioning move of UP's Home Plate display train for 2019's College World Series. Had a wb BNSF coal empty move as Amtrak #6 arrived, then the UP special made its reverse move to BNSF's Gibson yard. UP 1943 was on one end of the train with UP 4141 and 1111 were on the display end. Also grabbed a shot of private car Puget Sound on the tail end of todays #6.

Big Boy down at Durham waiting for the sold out UP Museum Special tomorrow. Makes an imposing sight sitting on the 7th street bridge. Can't chase or ride because I'll be operating the 1890 vintage steam loco at the zoo. Anybody feel sorry for me? I didn't think so. Steam on.
